Today we drove 2 hours east to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Volubilis, that was once considered the ancient capital of Mauritania and was ruled for many years by the Romans before it was overtaken by local tribes. Many of the structures were destroyed after an earthquake hit during the mid-18th century and the city was also looted by Moroccan rulers who needed the stones to build neighboring Meknes. But one can still imagine how magnificent this city must have been years and years ago. Now, it's a fantastic place for kids to run around and play hide-n-seek!
