A Year Older In Tafraoute

Everyone always says, "Age is just a number.".  While I do agree with that statement, a small part of me still hates the idea of growing older.  But for every birthday Robbie and the kids plan something special for me which helps me forget about the fact that I'm slowly ageing.  This year I celebrated my birthday biking and camping in Tafraoute, a small town in the Berber heartland of the Anti-Atlas mountains.

The drive to Tafraoute was stunning, so I knew our final destination would be just as beautiful.  And it was.  It was like a little oasis in the middle of nowhere.  There were palm trees and what looked like piles of red rocks all around us.  We felt so far away from Rabat.  But being a 9 hour drive from home, I suppose we really were.

Tafraoute is popular with bikers because there are few cars on the road and there are plenty of off-road tracks.  The kids don't get to go off-road very often, so when we did they were like true little mountain bikers.  The bumpiness made it difficult for Ember to take a nap in the Copilot.  But she was such a trooper.  We rode for 6 hours the second day and she was so good.  Perhaps the lollipop had a little something to do with it.

Tafraoute was a great place to spend my birthday and I would do the long drive all over again in a heartbeat.  Seeing my family having just as much fun as I was is the best gift.  And as much as I dislike the thought of growing older, at least I have awesome birthday celebrations to look forward to!
